Enix (full name: Enix Corporation, 株式会社エニックス) was a Japanese company that produced video games, anime & manga.
Founded by Yasuhiro Fukushima on September 22, 1975, as Eidansha Boshu Service Center (株式会社営団社募集サービスセンター) and renamed Enix in 1982.
The name is a wordplay on "phoenix," a mythical bird that's reborn from its own ashes, and "ENIAC," the world's first digital computer.
The company merged with Square Co., Ltd. on April 1, 2003, to become Square Enix Co., Ltd. As a result of the merge, Square Co., Ltd. was dissolved and Enix was the surviving company.
