Shadow Records was launched in 1995 as an Instinct Records sublabel, focused on the more organic side of the underground electronic music scene.

In addition to introducing artists like DJ Krush and DJ Cam to the North American market, Shadow also had a two year partnership with British label Ninja Tune, releasing early work by artists such as Funki Porcini, DJ Food, Up Bustle & Out, and 9 Lazy 9.
