Japanese record and manufacturing company, founded in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, March 1968.
It was a 50/50 joint-venture between Sony and Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc. (today CBS Inc.), which operated the CBS/Sony label in Japan.
In April 1968 Headquarters were relocated to Minato-ku, Tokyo.
Their manufacturing plant, the so-called Shizuoka Factory ((静岡工場, since 1 April 2019 Oigawa Production Center) opens in December 1968 in Oigawa, Shida-gun（now Yaizu City), Shizuoka Prefecture.
In February 1969, manufacturing of analogue discs begins. (First title: 8347984).
In August 1973, the company was renamed to CBS/Sony Inc.
The manufacturing department was subsequently split off from the new company and operated independently as CBS/Sony Records, Inc. Just the name disappeared from the records, however.
In April 1982 the manufacturing of compact discs (CDs) begins. (First title: Billy Joel / 52nd Street).
After Sony Corporation acquired CBS Records Inc. in January 1988, CBS/Sony Inc. folded into CBS/Sony Group Inc. as CBS/Sony Records, a division of CBS/Sony Group Inc.
In March 1988, CBS/Sony Records Inc., one of four wholly owned subsidiaries, was folded into CBS/Sony Group Inc. - as well as CBS/Sony Inc., Epic/Sony Inc., and Sony Video Software International Inc.
His successor was Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., incorporated in April 1991.
Since 1 April 2003 Sony Music Entertainment Inc. (Japan) changed its company name to SMEJ Inc. The name, Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., has been adopted as the company name for the music related subsidiary company.
Many releases that were manufactured by CBS/Sony Records, Inc. have "MANUFACTURED BY CBS/SONY RECORDS INC" around the center hole. When this appears, enter a "Manufactured By" credit for CBS/Sony Records, Inc.
When "CSR" appears, enter "Pressed By" credit for CSR (2).
