An American music journalist, writing on sounds in a variety of contexts, ranging from popular magazines to scholarly journals. The author of the Vinyl Freak column in "DownBeat" (200 of the articles have been published as an anthology), he teaches at the Art Institute of Chicago and also hosts radio programs. Additionally, he is a guitar player, turntablist, and sound mixologist who has been playing freely-improvised music since 1984.
